RE:UK’s ESG & Impact Investing Committee has developed a four-part article series exploring the concept of a Just Transition within the context of UK real estate.
Climate change is an urgent challenge, but its impacts, and the consequences of the transition to net zero, are not felt equally. A Just Transition recognises that decarbonisation must deliver not only for the climate, but also for people and communities, helping to address issues such as affordability, employment and economic resilience.
For UK real estate investors and managers, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The question is not simply whether we can decarbonise our portfolios, but whether we can do so in a way that delivers positive outcomes for the communities in which we invest.
The four articles take readers from understanding what a Just Transition means for UK real estate, from the investment case and practical implementation, to real-world examples of the principles in action.
The first three articles were originally published by AREF, with the fourth and final article published by RE:UK, in collaboration with Lloyds.
Article 4 - Just Transition in Practice
The fourth and final article brings Just Transition to life through five real-world case studies spanning development, energy infrastructure, housing retrofit, blended finance and asset transition.
It identifies the recurring conditions that can help turn Just Transition principles into practice and sets out five practical actions for fund managers, asset owners, financiers and advisers.
This article was written in collaboration with Lloyds and supported by CREFC Europe and UK Green Building Council.
Article 3 - Practical Steps and Considerations for a Just Transition
This third article tackles practical implementation - how investors can actually integrate Just Transition principles into their operations.
Article 2 - What can 'Just Transition' deliver for Real Estate Investors?
This second article explores the potential benefits of adopting a Just Transition approach. It also considers the challenges of implementation for the real estate industry, alongside future opportunities that overcoming these challenges can create.
Article 1 - What is a ‘Just Transition’ and Why Does it Matter for UK Real Estate?
