RE:UK Budget Commentary: Autumn 2026
Yesterday's Budget was an opportunity to address one of the most pressing challenges facing the real estate sector: development viability. The package felt very much like a budget full of small measures that cumulatively failed to meet the scale of pressures facing the sector.
With events in the Middle East squeezing the Chancellor’s fiscal headroom going into the budget, he has understandably prioritised support for households facing continued cost-of-living pressures. However, there is a risk that prioritising in this way comes at the expense of changes that deliver the longer-term conditions needed for businesses to invest, create jobs and drive productivity.
Further emerging detail on devolution is positive but, understandably, there remains lots of work still to be done. Ultimately, it is difficult not to see this Budget as a missed opportunity for the real estate sector.
